Space promotes exchange between educators and researchers focusing on sustainable development and the appreciation of scientific knowledge
The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) began this Monday (10), in Belém (PA), and already has the joint stand of the Association of Amazonian Universities (UNAMAZ) and the BioTec-Amazonia Association, located in the Green Zone, in the City Park.
The space was designed to host events and promote exchange between educators, researchers and institutions with actions aimed at sustainable development, reinforcing the idea that education and science are essential pillars for the preservation of the Amazon and other biomes.
Until the end of the Conference, the public will be able to learn more about the work of the network of Amazonian universities and the research and bioeconomy initiatives developed by the two institutions.
Opening of the booth
The opening of the booth was attended by members of the UNAMAZ and BioTec-Amazônia coordination teams, led by Professor José Seixas Lourenço, as well as guests and institutional partners.
During the ceremony, Seixas Lourenço highlighted the importance of Belém hosting COP30 — in the heart of the Amazon — and the strategic role of the region in global climate balance.
“It is the standing forest that retains, absorbs, and transforms carbon into oxygen. That is why it is called the ‘lungs of the world.’ COP30 brings the climate debate at a time when it has become evident that we are at the limit of gas emissions, and that developed countries need to review their energy matrices. In this context, the Amazon takes on even greater importance,” the professor emphasized.
He also stressed that the maintenance of the Amazon rainforest depends on intelligence and scientific knowledge, with strong investment in Universities, Research Institutes, and Third Sector Organizations in the eight countries of the Amazon Basin.
“To keep the forest standing and add value to its natural wealth, it is necessary to invest in intelligence. It is the universities and research institutions that can transform this fantastic forest into a source of prosperity and quality of life for the populations that live here,” he added.
Amazonian Intelligence
According to Seixas Lourenço, the UNAMAZ and BioTec-Amazônia stand aims to show COP30 participants what Amazonian intelligence is producing.
In the process of revitalization with the support of the Ministry of Education, UNAMAZ reinforces its mission to integrate leaders of universities and research institutes from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.
BioTec-Amazônia, in turn, has been working since 2016 in the management of public policies for research and development of the productive chains of Amazonian biodiversity.
“These are two arms of the same action. Here at COP we show how this integration between UNAMAZ and BioTec-Amazônia takes place,” explained Professor Lourenço.
Participating in the opening of the stand were the Pro Tempore Executive Secretary of UNAMAZ, Nazaré Imbiriba, the members of the Advisory Board Carlos Lazary and Mariano Castro, the lawyer Lucas Lima Ribeiro (OAB-DF) and the businessman Joacir Alves, among other guests.
