The Association of Amazonian Universities (UNAMAZ) presented, this Wednesday (19), during COP 30, its Strategic Plan 2025–2030, in a panel dedicated to technical-financial cooperation for science, technology, innovation and resource training. The event took place at the institution's stand, in Belém.
In opening the panel, the Pro Tempore President of UNAMAZ and CEO of BioTec-Amazônia, Seixas Lourenço, highlighted the importance of institutional coordination for advancing sustainable development in the region.
“We have projects for the sustainable development of the Amazon. What we need is partnership with the public sector, institutions, and entities so that we can work together in the eight countries that make up UNAMAZ, especially in securing the necessary funding to implement the initiatives of the entrepreneurial researchers at BioTec-Amazônia,” he stated.
Lourenço also provided a retrospective of the trajectory of the two institutions: UNAMAZ, founded in 1987, and BioTec-Amazônia, created in 2016. The network currently brings together 80 universities, research institutes, and entities from the productive sector in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. BioTec-Amazônia operates with a network of laboratories specializing in bioeconomy and a team of entrepreneurial researchers focused on product certification and traceability.
Among the strategic axes shared by the Amazonian countries are: Climate Change; Human Populations; Health and Environment; Biodiversity; Forest and Water Resources; Education; Sustainable Local Development; and Integrated Knowledge Platforms about the Amazon.

During the event, UNAMAZ honored the German professor and sociologist Thomas Mitschein, from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), recognized for his contribution to structural areas of the Amazonian reality, such as the environment, sanitation, and agricultural production. Mitschein worked on several fronts, including the Poverty and Environment in the Amazon (Poema) program.
"I feel Amazonian and very grateful for this tribute from UNAMAZ," declared the professor.
