Amazon Information System

SIAMAZ is an automated cooperative system of scientific, technological and cultural information within the Amazonian countries, structured by UNAMAZ with financial support from the IDB, to integrate information units and share resources, coordinated in turn by the national networks of each country, operating in accordance with defined norms, mechanisms and methodological instruments, in order to effectively circulate the information production generated in/about the Region.

Project on the impacts of gold mining in the Amazon

This project was carried out in Venezuela with two case studies, respectively in the town of Las Claritas in Bolivar State and San Juan de Manapiare in Amazonas. The project was carried out by the Centro de Estudios Del Desarrolho (CENDES) of the Universidad Central de Venezuela and financed by IDRC/Canada. Two workshops on “Gold Mining and Its Impacts on Environmental Health in the Venezuelan Amazon” were organized in Puerto Ordaz from April 1-4, 1997 and in Caracas from July 17-18, 1997, with the participation of the Amazonian countries.

International Technical Cooperation Management Program

Aware of the need to train specialized personnel to enable self-sustainable development and protect the natural resources of the Amazon, the Superintendence for the Development of the Amazon (SUDAM) promoted the creation of PROCINT/Amazonia in 1993. The following participated in this initiative: the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Center for Advanced Amazonian Studies (NAEA/UFPA), the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) and UNAMAZ. Responsibility for the design and implementation of the Program was entrusted to the University of São Paulo (USP), through its School of Economics and Administration (FEA).

United Nations University/CNPq Scholarship Program

In 1996, the University of the Nations established an agreement with UNAMAZ and the Federal University of Pará, through which it supported a series of activities related to training, research and dissemination of knowledge about the Amazon. Among these activities, specialization scholarships for students from Amazonian countries (outside Brazil) to take the International Specialization Course in Scientific and Technological Policy for the Sustainable Development of the Amazon (CIPCITAM) stand out.

Environmental Health Impact Assessment Program in the Amazon - EISA

The overall objective of the Program was to contribute to the study and prevention of the negative impacts of development on the environment and the health of Amazonian populations. In order to achieve these objectives, a five-year program was approved, divided into two phases of 30 months each. The objective was to create a network of 8 Coordinating Reference Centers (one in each Amazonian country) that would function as an open, cooperative and non-competitive mechanism with a horizontal structure that would facilitate the exchange of information, methodologies and resources between institutions, projects and programs.

South-South cooperation programme for sustainable development in the humid tropics

The Program originated from the “1st International Conference on Sustainable Development in the Humid Tropics” (Manaus, June 1992), organized by UNAMAZ, UNESCO, TWAS and UNU. The Conference’s main objective was to discuss a multi-year program of South-South cooperation in sustainable development to strengthen the exchange of information and experiences, and experts with the aim of developing joint and parallel research projects, and disseminating the knowledge acquired. From 1992 to 1995, the Program held a series of events in Brazil, Ivory Coast, Thailand, Madagascar and India. A meeting is scheduled for Kunming, China, in December 1997. In Brazil, one of the program's activities in 1995 was the support provided to the Event “Natural Reserves, Biosphere Reserves and Sustainable Development”, promoted by the Center for Advanced Amazonian Studies - NAEA/UFPa, UNAMAZ and Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, in Belém from 4 to 14/12/95.

Multinational Project for Secondary and Higher Education

The Multinational Project for Secondary and Higher Education - PROME-SUP was one of three multinational projects adopted as priorities for the 1990s by the Regional Education Program (PREDE) of the Organization of American States (OAS). In the case of Brazil, the Federal University of Pará, home of UNAMAZ, was designated responsible for implementing PROMESUP, and developed activities that contributed to: (1) the training and qualification of human resources, (2) the development and dissemination of specialized research, and (3) the formulation of strategies in the area of higher education. The main results of these actions can be summarized in four major axes, all of a multinational nature: Environmental education and Amazonian development; Indigenous education; Distance education; and Consolidation of UNAMAZ.
